Did you know?
Driving on the left in Britain originates from jousting competitions, when horsemen needed to keep their weapon in their best hand, ready to meet their oncoming opponent. For most people this is their right-hand, which meant passing on the left. During the 18th century a passing on the left rule was introduced on Old London Bridge to reduce confusion and congestion, giving rise to a ditty:
"The rule of the road is a paradox quite
If you stick to the left you are sure to be right
"
Napoleon however, was left handed and introduced the custom of passing on the right. It was also during Napoleon’s reign that the first roads were introduced in Continental Europe.
